Led by drummer and educator Matthew Elton Smith, this Southern California jazz quartet brings together four distinctive voices from the region’s contemporary jazz community. Smith is joined by pianist DJ Caalaman, alto saxophonist Nicole McCabe, and bassist Logan Kane. Smith holds an MFA in Jazz Performance from California Institute of the Arts, where he studied with Joe LaBarbera, Randy Gloss, and Swapan Chaudhuri. His music has been recorded at Capitol Records, and his San Diego-based projects have earned recognition from the San Diego music community. As a performer and educator, Smith works across jazz, commercial music, and improvisation throughout Southern California. Pianist DJ Caalaman is an active San Diego-based performer whose work spans jazz, Brazilian music, original composition, and collaborative projects. He has performed at major Southern California venues and appeared as pianist with Ali Paris in a La Jolla Music Society concert at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. Caalaman also leads his own trio and has created original music for interdisciplinary projects. Alto saxophonist Nicole McCabe is an award-winning composer, bandleader, and educator whose work bridges contemporary jazz, post-bop, and experimental music. A USC Thornton graduate and recipient of the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s Jeff Clayton Memorial New Note Award, McCabe has worked with artists including Jeff Parker, Louis Cole, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ari Hoenig, Kiefer, and Justin Brown. Bassist Logan Kane is a genre-defying composer and performer who has collaborated with David Binney, Chris Potter, Becca Stevens, Nate Wood, Joel Ross, and Steve Lehman, while also performing with Thumpasaurus and co-leading projects with McCabe. Together, the quartet combines tradition, groove, composition, and adventurous improvisation
