The Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio is a prominent, contemporary ensemble based in San Diego, California, formed in 2013 by drummer and composer Matthew Elton Smith alongside pianist Ed Kornhauser and bassist Mackenzie Leighton. Known for combining a traditional swinging jazz foundation with an indie-pop vibe, the group creates a unique, rhythmically free sound that flows seamlessly between high-energy crescendos and calm soundscapes across acclaimed albums like Shorthanded, RETROgrade, and I.Am.Calm.. The group achieved global recognition from August 8 to August 9, 2017, when they teamed up with vocalist Leonard Patton to set a Guinness World Record for the most live music gigs in 24 hours, successfully playing 10-minute sets at 70 different San Diego venues to raise funds for youth music education.
