JULIANNA BARWICK & MARY LATTIMORE

JULIANNA BARWICK & MARY LATTIMORE

Mon, Apr 28

MARY LATTIMORE Through evocative, emotionally resonant music, Goodbye, Hotel Arkada, the new LP from American harpist and composer Mary Lattimore, speaks not just for its beloved namesake — a hotel in Croatia facing renovation — but for a universal loss that is shared. Six sprawling pieces shaped by change; nothing will ever be the same, and here, the artist, evolving in synthesis, celebrates and mourns the tragedy and beauty of the ephemeral, all that is lived and lost to time. Documented and edited in uncharacteristically measured sessions over the course of two years, the material remains rooted in improvisation while glistening as the most refined and robust in Lattimore’s decade-long catalog. It finds her communing with friends, contemporaries, and longtime influences, in full stride yet slowing down to nurture songs in new ways. The cast includes Lol Tolhurst (The Cure), Meg Baird, Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Roy Montgomery, Samara Lubelski, and Walt McClements. “When I think of these songs, I think about fading flowers in vases, melted candles, getting older, being on tour and having things change while you’re away, not realizing how ephemeral experiences are until they don’t happen anymore, fear for a planet we’re losing because of greed, an ode to art and music that’s really shaped your life that can transport you back in time, longing to maintain sensitivity and to not sink into hollow despondency.” Memories, scenes, and split-second impressions have long filled Lattimore’s musical universe. As one of today’s preeminent instrumental storytellers, she has “the uncanny ability to pluck a string in a way that will instantly make someone remember the taste of their fifth birthday cake,” writes Pitchfork’s Jemima Skala. Lattimore’s impulse to record life as it happens matches her drive to travel and perform, as profiled by Grayson Haver Currin for The New York Times: “Lattimore recognized that being in motion shook loose strands of inspiration, moods she wanted to express with melody. She needed, then, to remain on the go.” That sense of fluidity has also made her a prolific collaborator outside of solo work. 2020’s Silver Ladders, recorded with Slowdive’s Neil Halstead, opened the door for Lattimore to widen the vision of her primary project as well, and its proper follow-up is the natural next scale. “All of these people I asked to contribute have deeply affected and inspired my life.” For the title and inspiration, Lattimore’s mind returns to the island of Hvar in Croatia, where she first saw those silver ladders at the water’s edge. “There’s a big old hotel there called the Hotel Arkada, and you could tell it had been hosting holiday-goers for decades in a great way. I walked around the lobby and the empty ballrooms and it looked like a well-worn, well-loved place. My friend Stacey who lives there told me to ‘say goodbye to Hotel Arkada, it might not be here when you get back’ and I heard soon after that it was actually going to be renovated in a very crisp, modern way.” Lattimore became fixated on the ingredients that make a place special — for Hotel Arkada, the patinaed chandeliers, the patternedbedspreads, the echoes of its intangible charm — and how when those leave this world, as they inevitably always will, it feels important to memorialize them, “to bottle it for a brief second.” JULIANNA BARWICK Julianna Barwick (she/her) is a Los Angeles based composer, vocalist, and producer who makes deep, reflective compositions rooted in the human voice.  Over the years she has made several critically acclaimed records. Her self-released debut “Sanguine” came out in 2007, followed by "Florine" in 2009, and “The Magic Place” in 2011. In 2013, she released "Nepenthe," which marked Barwick’s first steps into collaborating, working with producer and film composer Alex Somers in Reykjavík. She expanded her parameters further on “Will,” her 2016 album, enlisting more collaborators in Mas Ysa's Thomas Arsenault, Dutch cellist Maarten Vos, and Chairlift percussionist Jamie Ingalls. In July 2020 she released "Healing Is A Miracle," which featured Jónsi (Sigur Rós), Mary Lattimore, and Nosaj Thing, earning Pitchfork's coveted 'Best New Music' for 2020. Her many collaborations include making the music for a performance with the NYC dance company balletcollective, Ecstatic Music Festival, with modernmedieval, a record with Helado Negro as a duo name Ombre, and many more. She released “Circumstance Synthesis” EP, on RVNG Intl. sub-label Commend There, which were excerpts from a lobby score in partnership with Microsoft A.I., that responded to the environment in the downtown sky from New York’s Sister City Hotel, in 2019. Julianna took a natural step into the world of composing for film when she co-scored the short film I Remember Nothing. She has since gone on to score a number of short films and documentaries and is now more actively pursuing this area of her career, taking on more scoring opportunities alongside her artist work.

KIMMI BITTER & THE WESTSIDE TWANG | CHLOE LOU & THE SIDELONG GLANCES

Fri, May 09

COMPLIMENTARY ENTRY | NO RESERVATION REQUIRED | SEATING ON A FIRST-ARRIVAL BASIS | NO DINNER SERVICE | 21+ 10PM - "The future of classic country is Kimmi Bitter" as Saving Country Music boldly states. Driven by a hyper-obsession with the 1960s, Kimmi Bitter & the Westside Twang create a soundscape that blends old-school country with surf rock, psychedelic twangs, and a touch of mod flair. Creating a buzz from her grassroots efforts and vigorous touring, her debut album “Old School” hit the ground running in 2024 landing at #24 on the Americana Album Radio Chart with “My Grass is Blue” debuting on the Americana Single Radio Chart. This ain't your typical Nashville sound. "Old School" is a love letter to the Countrypolitan golden age, with a healthy dose of reverb-drenched twang and rock-n-roll swagger thrown in for good measure. Harmony-stricken ballads “My Grass is Blue” and “I Dream of You” have grown comparisons of a time when Patsy Cline with The Jordanaires overtook radio airwaves. Saving Country Music called "My Grass is Blue" "solid country gold," nominating it for Single of the Year alongside the likes of Charley Crockett and Sierra Ferrell. Though driving her career independently, Bitter is no stranger to building up her accolades. She found recognition in her hometown winning Best Country/Americana Artist and “My Grass is Blue” was nominated for Song of the Year by the San Diego Music Awards 2023. Her breakout album also skyrocketed to #1 on the Alt. Country Specialty Charts. 8PM - San Diego’s beloved singer/songwriter Chloe Lou Liddell fronts The Sidelong Glances, keeping the flame of traditional country music burning in San Diego with a honky-tonk A-team of Shae Moseley, drums; Philip McArdle, Telecaster; and Tom Ward, bass. Some Patsy and Dolly, some Willie and Waylon, all Country and Western.

At it's core Juice Box is an instrumental group, yet on the B side of it's debut and self titled release it features a San Francisco based vocalist "Lewis Gallardo" singing his song, Heartbreak Reprise. GILBERT CASTELLANOS & THE NEW LATIN JAZZ SEXTET - SUPPERCLUB

GILBERT CASTELLANOS & THE NEW LATIN JAZZ SEXTET - SUPPERCLUB

Thu, May 22

*Doors open at 6pm | 21+ | Dinner starts promptly at 7pm.* Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and raised in Fresno, California, Gilbert’s musical career was preordained; the only son to his eponym father, a touring Cumbia band leader, singer and arranger, Gilbert was strongly influenced by his predecessor’s deep appreciation for classical composers and big band jazz ensembles, broadening young Gilbert's horizons from an early age. Gilbert Sr. strongly encouraged Gilbert toward the Jazz genre when at first he showed an interest in trumpet at age 6. By age 11, Gilbert’s intensive training and education provided the context to begin playing professionally, and at age 15 he preformed with mentor and icon Dizzy Gillespie at the Monterrey Jazz Festival. A fierce advocate of formal jazz education, Gilbert held the position of Adjunct Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music from 2001 to 2013. Thereafter, he served as the Artistic Director of the International Academy of Jazz San Diego from 2014-2016, during which time he began conducting high school workshops and developing a more proactive role in mentorship. During his time visiting Title I schools, he recognized a need for increased accessibility to formal education, noting that many truly gifted students were deprived the opportunities to further their education due to monetary constraints. Thusly, in 2016 Castellanos founded the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory based in San Diego, California. Using his influence in a burgeoning Jazz community, one he is credited in large with establishing, Gilbert began successfully soliciting donations for and supporting thousands of dollars of scholarship to finance Conservatory Education Equity for economically disadvantaged students of promise. To date, the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory has graduated hundreds of bright musicians of diverse backgrounds with Gilbert serving as personal mentor and advocate for each, often writing college recommendation letters and offering every one of his students "real world" experience each Wednesday evening at ensemble performances

THE JONNY TARR SITUATION

THE JONNY TARR SITUATION

Sat, May 24

COMPLIMENTARY ENTRY | NO RESERVATION REQUIRED | SEATING ON A FIRST-ARRIVAL BASIS | NO DINNER SERVICE | 21+ "I am originally from Wales, but somehow I always knew I would end up in California. I started playing the saxophone when I was 11 years of age because I thought it might get me girls and I ended up really loving it. I got involved with Jazz early on and found that this was a solid foundation for understanding many more genres of music. I went to Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts to get my music degree and after college I toured Europe, the US and Japan and played nearly every major festival in the UK as well as opening for people such as GOLDIE, THE EGG, BREAKBEAT ERA and GIL SCOTT HERON during the early 2000s. I was also part of the bands for PART TIME HEROES and THE NEXTMEN (with whom I wrote and sang the tune ROCKETS which has now had over 5.5 million streams on Spotify at time of writing) I was one of the first people in Europe to play saxophone with House music DJs and found that I was mostly interested in music that made people dance. This is the music I wanted to create. With the realization that the saxophone is not really a songwriting tool, I taught myself guitar and piano and I used my understanding of music theory to help me form bands and a unique solo show where I can pretty much incorporate all of my skills at once. I now consider myself a singer/songwriter first and foremost but I am consistently involved with a wide range of projects as well as my own band - THE JONNY TARR QUINTET. Since moving to the United States, I have been lucky enough to open for such legendary acts as THE VICTOR WOOTEN TRIO, OZOMATLI and THE FAMILY STONE, plus share the stage with Billy Gibbons of ZZ TOP, multi grammy award winning BEBE WINANS and I have written and recorded with MARIO CALDATTO JNR. the legendary producer of The Beastie Boys. I even got to be part of the opening act, THE PINK FLOYD EXPERIENCE for FOREIGNER’s Cold As Ice tour in 2019. I also recently won my second SAN DIEGO MUSIC AWARD for BEST POP ARTIST 2023 and headlined the NAMM show’s D’Angelico Stage with my Quintet. I just released my second studio album for San Diego’s PACIFIC RECORDS titled THE RULES and was just named as an OFFICIAL TAYLOR GUTARS ARTIST."
